RBSL develops Brimstone Overwatch Mission Module in partnership with MBDA

Boxer Brimstone

Capitalising on the modularity of #Boxer, and to demonstrate the Rapid Prototype design and manufacturing capability of RBSL and our partners, we have developed a dedicated 'Brimstone Overwatch Mission Module' concept demonstrator in partnership with MBDA, which has been showcased in a video.

The demonstrator was constructed in only 10 weeks working closely with suppliers to go straight from CAD models into CNC manufacture to reduce lead time and cost. In addition, 3D printing was used to manufacture components alongside traditional methods.

Boxer Modularity

The Boxer vehicle consists of two separate modules: Drive Module and Mission Module. Role specific mission modules can be changed in the workshop or in the Field.

  • The Drive Module contains all the automotive components, the driver's station, important supply components (e.g. air conditioning) as well as the necessary interfaces to the Mission Module.

  • Mission Module configuration is specific to each vehicle variant (e.g. Command, ICV, Specialist, Ambulance). It can be adapted to meet role specific UK requirements - the Boxer Overwatch is one adaptation that could be considered.

An MBDA product, Brimstone offers 'one missile, multi-platform' versatility. Brimstone is battle-proven in defeating heavily armoured static, moving and manoeuvring target sets with low collateral damage in restrictive engagement scenarios. It can be simply integrated into platform architectures and is best in class Insensitive Munitions-compliant for safety.

The challenges of the modern battlefield increasingly demand that tactical land forces have the organic capability to engage adversaries with precision at range and in volume. The Boxer Overwatch Mission Module would provide the tactical commander with the capability to deliver precision anti-armour effects at long ranges, with no modification to the Boxer Drive Module.

A video has been produced using the Prototype Mission Module created by RBSL and MBDA. This video is an effective way to help convey the potential of the proposed new Mission Module design. A great conversation starter on RBSL's capability and role in making the most of the Boxer platform above and beyond our current contracts, and our contribution to the Land Industrial Strategy.

The video was shot at Telford, firstly showing our main facility, then - with the East Test Track Loop acting as the backdrop for an in-theatre scene - soldiers from the Mercian Regiment show how Boxer Brimstone could be used in a mock exercise.
